The long journey

After the fall of the Northern front in the Spanish Civil War, Franco's troops began to move Republican prisoners-of-war en masse to concentration camps in fascist-controlled areas. One group was loaded onto a goods train to be taken on a 3-day journey to the south of Spain under the most appalling conditions. They would never arrive. Shortly before reaching their destination, a tremendous accident killed over fifty of those on board. To this day, the exact circumstances remain a mystery.
